In a significant enforcement drive, Dubai Police seized 8,786 bicycles and electric bikes in the first half of the year, following the implementation of new safety regulations introduced in March 2022. These measures aim to enhance road safety and ensure compliance with traffic laws.
The new rules mandate that anyone riding an e-scooter or electric bike must possess a driving licence permit issued by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). Additionally, riders younger than 16 are prohibited from operating these vehicles. The regulations also cover other bikes specified by the RTA, emphasizing the importance of proper licensing and age restrictions.
Over 4,000 vehicles were confiscated for unauthorized modifications to their engines, which led to increased speed, noise, and potential danger on the roads. These modifications and other traffic law violations have prompted stricter enforcement measures.
Failing to adhere to the new laws can result in severe consequences, including:
The resolution also reiterates existing rules, such as prohibiting the use of bicycles on roads where the speed limit is 60kph or more. Cyclists are also reminded to avoid jogging or walking tracks and refrain from reckless practices like hooking onto vehicles while biking.
Reflective vests and helmets are mandatory for all cyclists and e-bike riders. Carrying passengers is not allowed unless the bike has separate seats designed for them. For cyclists under 12, it is required that they be accompanied by an adult cyclist who is 18 or older.
In March, Dubai Police launched an awareness campaign to highlight common breaches of e-scooter and cyclist rules. The campaign focused on educating riders about the importance of wearing helmets and the dangers of traveling against the flow of traffic.
The seizure figures were announced during a performance review meeting chaired by Maj Gen Abdullah Al Marri, Commander in Chief of Dubai Police. During the meeting, Maj Gen Al Marri emphasized the strategic goal of reducing accident rates and lowering the death index per 100,000 population.
These efforts underscore Dubai Police's commitment to maintaining safety on the roads and ensuring that all riders adhere to the regulations designed to protect them and others.
